On-Call/Bulky Item Clean-Up Program

Alameda County Industries – City of San Leandro
On-Call/Bulky Item Clean-Up Collection Program Guidelines

The temporary bin system will be replaced with a new clean-up program in February 2025. The new program allows for more recycling, reuse, employee safety, and less waste.

SINGLE-FAMILY and MULTI-PLEX CUSTOMERS:
All single-family and multi-plex residential customers receive two (2) on-call/bulky item clean-up collection days per household/unit per year at no additional charge.

MULTI-FAMILY COMPLEX TENANT CUSTOMERS*:
All multi-family complex tenants receive one (1) on-call/bulky item clean-up collection day per unit per year at no additional charge.

An on-call/bulky item clean-up includes:

  • Collection of up to three (3) cubic yards (3′ x 3′ x 9′) of materials and up to three (3) large bulky items (up to 150 lbs. each) per set out. This includes the collection of clean, undamaged, reusable items that are set apart from other items.
  • A fee is charged for materials volume exceeding three (3) cubic yards and three (3) bulky items. Contact us for rates.
  • Extra clean-up days can be arranged for a fee. Contact us for rates.

Accepted Items:

  • Up to three (3) large bulky items (up to 150 lbs. per item; remove or seal doors on appliances).
  • Trash that is contained (bagged, boxed, or bundled).
  • Recyclables include cardboard, scrap metal, paper, bottles, cans (bagged, boxed, or bundled). Best efforts will be made to recycle these items.
  • Reusable items include housewares, toys, sports equipment, non-upholstered furniture, clothing (clean and dry), accessories, framed pictures/art, craft/sewing items, books, magazines, CDs, VHS, and DVDs. Clean, undamaged items only. (Please bag or box small/multiple/loose items).

Large Bulky Item Collection Program
Up to three (3) large bulky items, such as appliances, mattresses, and furniture (up to 150 lbs. each), will be collected. Please remove or seal doors on appliances. One of your bulky items can be substituted with an electronic waste item such as computers, printers, televisions, large microwaves, and similar items. Place small electronic waste items in a discardable box or bag.

Reusable Materials Collection Program
ACI will collect undamaged items that can be used again. Click here for examples of reusable items.

  • Please place reusable items separate from items that will be landfilled, recycled, or composted. Please help our drivers identify reusable items by labeling/identifying them “REUSE”. Click here for a printable sign.
  • Reusable items will be sent to a sorting/donation facility (no receipts are given for reusable items). PLEASE NOTE: The ACI San Leandro Reusable Materials Collection Program is subject to the variability of markets and the reuse organization acceptance policies and procedures. Reuse may be limited at times.
  • Click here for an online guide of resources for recycling, disposal, and donations.

Please Remember:

  • Do not set items out more than 24-hours in advance.
  • Please do not block street or sidewalk access.
  • A fee is charged for materials volume exceeding three (3) cubic yards and three (3) bulky items. Contact us for rates.
  • No single item over 150 pounds.
  • Please contain (bag, box, or bundle) loose/small/multiple items.
  • PLEASE NOTE: Two different vehicles will be collecting the materials that are set out.
  • Add a “REUSE” label for items set apart for reuse.

*Multi-plex and Multi-family customers, please coordinate with your building manager/owner a suitable collection location accessible to ACI collection vehicles before scheduling your on call clean-up.

DID YOU KNOW?
Scrap Metal: Items (less than 30 lbs.) can also be placed in your blue recyclables cart.

Yard Trimmings: Grass clippings, leaves, and small branches less than 6″ in diameter can go in the green organics cart.

THESE ITEMS ARE NOT ACCEPTED IN THE ON-CALL CLEAN UP/BULKY ITEM, AND REUSABLE ITEM COLLECTION PROGRAMS:

  • Dirt, rocks, and construction or demolition debris – Debris box service is available for these items. Click here for more information about debris box services and rates.
  • Abandoned automobiles, trees, or any item (e.g. large auto parts, etc.) exceeding 150 lbs. in weight.
  • Household hazardous waste (HHW) – radioactive materials, unwanted medications and sharps, and poisonous or toxic materials are not accepted in any Alameda County Industries collection carts or bins. For a comprehensive list and information on disposal locations, please visit www.StopWaste.org/hhw or call the Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste team at 1-800-606-6606.

Got Extra?
Additional garbage, bulky, or electronic-waste items can be collected for a charge. A special type of collection bin is required for construction, demolition, and landscaping materials. Contact us for more information.

REMEMBER, IT’S ALWAYS BETTER TO REUSE, RECYCLE, COMPOST, OR DONATE THAN TO DISPOSE!
Before throwing items away, consider reusing, donating, or recycling them as an alternative.
